Horse Love, Is Love: The Harley-D Story
Our first knowledge of Harley-D comes from a Russian Circus Women - Harley's first owner and trainer. She spotted him in a pasture in Florida.
"He was a gypsee horse!" she told me while we were standing next to three elephants at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe Washington. "I had to have him becasue he was so beautiful."
He had to have a job to support himself in the circus so he became a vaulting horse.
The job consisted of trotting around in a circle while a women snapped at his feet with a whip - while several people did headstands (among other things) on his back.
During a performance he jumped out of the ring and injured his foot. "He did not like the lights, the music, the noise." his former Russion owner told me. "He spooked at anything - chicken, lion, elephant. I paid a lot of money for him to rehab in Colorado." He was loved even then.
The second time his injury occured he was left with Katie Venter at Faith Farm in Redmond, Washington. Katie's place was laid back and Harley- then Toni - had the time to rehab for a year without work. Then Katie's sister took him to Oregon State University for a year as a 'project' and taught him to be a basic riding horse.
Tony won the lottery when he became Harley-D. He now had the freedom to be himself, be appreciated for the character he is, and ridden by a beginner happy to just walk.
Over the 5 years Haley has served Harley as chief of staff he has been in several different barns including Mission Farrier School, Simpatico, Gold Creek, Pots Creek, and his bachlor pad in Woodinville.
Then in 2007 Harley got his dream. Eight Acres of grass with a cool water trough where apples float daily, cows and coyotees meander by and a comfy warm stall awaits each night with dinner, desert, and a comfort system bedding for his arthritic coffin bones.
